  1. Does this document tell the name of the boarding school Wilson Miles Carey’s father ran in Baltimore, MD in the 1870’s? I would appreciate knowing. Thanks!

  2. We do not see anything in the volume pertaining to a school run by WMC’s father but there is a reference to a school headed by his mother in her obituary.

The mother of Wilson Miles Cary, Jane Margaret Carr Cary, was born in 1809 in Albemarle County, Virginia. She established a school at “Haystack,” near Baltimore in 1842 and the school was subsequently moved to Baltimore. She “presided over the school for 61 years.” Her obituary says her daughter was associated with the school as well and it was called the Southern Home School. The headline of the obituary, however, says the school was named for Mrs. Cary. Her death occurred in 1903.
